About Cahaba Brewing Company

The Early Days

Cahaba Brewing Company was founded in the summer of 2011 by a group of friends united by their love of craft beer and home brewing. Together, they devised a plan to build a brewery in beautiful Birmingham, Alabama.

The group found an excellent location for the brewery in the Pepper Place/Lakeview district of Birmingham on 3rd Avenue South. The 8000 square foot building housed the brewery and tasting room until 2016. Cahaba hand-selected and assembled the brewing equipment necessary for the job. The original Cahaba Brewing Company set-up consisted of a Premier Stainless 3.5 bbl brewhouse outfitted with four 7 bbl fermenters, two 15 bbl fermenters (Frank) & (Stein), and three 7 bbl brite tanks. With a few struggles and hurdles to jump, we started brewing beer in the late spring of 2012 and officially opened to the public in September 2012.

In January 2016, we celebrated our "Last Pint Night" at the original 3rd Ave South location. The new 51,000 square foot building, located in the Historical Continental Gin Complex, opened its doors on January 19. The space is flexible, offering multiple options for all varieties of private event needs such as weddings, reunions, corporate events and birthday parties.

The production facility has expanded from the original 3.5 bbl brewhouse to a 30 bbl brewhouse. The new set-up consists of three 60 bbl fermenter tanks and three 120 bbl fermenter tank as well as one 60 bbl brite tank and one 120 bbl brite tank. In addition, the 3.5 bbl system is still in use for our Pilot Batch beers. Cahaba uses a Wild Goose canning line with 5 filler heads to package the American Blonde, Oka Uba IPA, White IPA, Pale Ale and seasonal beers. Cahaba is distributed throughout Greater Birmingham, Huntsville, Tuscaloosa and Auburn.

Community Involvement

Since the beginning, Cahaba Brewing Company has had the goal of providing the craft beer community with clean and consistent brews with a broad variety of flavors and styles. In 2018, Cahaba collaborated with REV Birmingham's Urban Food Project to create the Proximity Series, a collection of hyperlocal brews using ingredients sourced from Alabama farms. Each beer in the Proximity Series features seasonal local produce that travels from Alabama farms to your glass.

In a semi-annual collaboration, our CahaBAZAAR brings local artists, makers and non-profits an opportunity to reach the community. CahaBAZAAR is always free to attend and includes special beer releases, live music and interactive art alongside the large number of vendors on site.

Every April, Cahaba partners with Breast Cancer Research Foundation of Alabama to put on CahabaQue, a widely attended barbecue cook-off fundraiser featuring local restaurants, professional and novice cooking teams. Silent auctions, live music and beer pair perfectly with the fundraising spirit.

Cahaba serves as the official beer sponsor of Sidewalk Film Festival and hosts their annual Salsa Showdown. The Sidewalk Film Festival is Birmingham's premiere film festival in the historic Theater District. The festival features inclusive and diverse films, reaching thousands of movie-goers in a single weekend. Sidewalk's largest fundraising event, Salsa Showdown, is held on our covered patio. In this event, local restaurants compete for the title of Best Salsa.
